About Fresh.Point

Fresh.Point is a collaborative monitoring platform for wholesalers and international traders in the European fruit and vegetable sector. It connects traders with food laboratories and supports the workflow of assigning, reporting and analysing product tests. It was developed in cooperation with a consortium of international traders and wholesalers in the European fruit and vegetable sector, including Greenyard Fresh (Univeg), Gemüsering and Andretta to improve the process of assigning and managing product samples at relevant food laboratories. At present about 100 companies are using the Fresh.Point system to manage their sampling processes, together with 20 laboratories.

Fruit and vegetables from around the world are distributed and sold to millions of European households on a daily basis. To ensure the quality and safety of these products – and thus safeguard the well-being of consumers – importers and wholesalers have to verify if products contain residues of forbidden substances or if any residues of pesticides, additives, environmental toxicants or microbiological contaminations exceed the maximum limits. These limits are set by both legislators and standards bodies, like HDE and QS, as well as some major food retail chains, like Aldi, Rewe and Edeka.

To this end traders examine thousands of product samples that have to be analysed by independent food laboratories every year. And only those suppliers that continually comply with the standards will also be allowed to supply in the future.

But these laboratory assessments do not come cheap: one analysis can cost up to € 300,-. Furthermore, the process of assigning tests and reporting and analysing the results puts a heavy administrative burden on both traders and laboratories, which makes the process error-prone.

Therefore, to ensure process quality, to share costs and to get more information out of collected data, the German traders Greenyard Fresh (Univeg), Gemüsering and Andretta, as well as the Landesverband Baden-Württemberg, have joined forces and assigned ChainPoint to develop Fresh.Point.
